Spring Striped Bass

Spring Striped Bass There is no more iconic fish in North Carolina coastal river systems than the striped bass or 'rockfish', which makes its annual run from the Pamlico Sound through the Pamlico River and into the freshwater Tar River, and also to the north from the Albemarle Sound into the Roanoke River.

Once they are there in numbers, the guides at Carolina Backcountry are experts at locating and targeting the fish that can be lifetime memories for anglers. Trips to both rivers are offered, including some fishing in the Roanoke River Wildlife Refuge.

The annual run culminates with the best fishing in true spring, from April 1 through May 10, and a boat designed to handle the different conditions of the rivers can put anglers safely and consistently right on the fish.

When schools are found and fish are on the hunt, 15 fish per angler is possible. For the experienced angler, trips in the upper Tar around Tarboro are offered which target bigger, older fish. Fly fishermen can experience the unique thrill of hooking, playing, landing and releasing a striper on the fly, and do so with an experienced guide who spends his summers guiding trout and salmon anglers on Alaska's Kenai River.

The North Carolina river systems offer their own wildlife-rich ecosystem. A day of fishing here also means a chance to see bald eagles, ospreys and other birds of prey. The shallows and sand banks are prime places to see other river residents in their natural environment like waterfowl, herons, cranes, deer, beavers and otters.

We DO NOT fish bait on the Roanoke River. Our fishing style is fast paced casting artificial lures with a heavy focus on topwater fishing in a section of the river most folks can't get to. We don't fish in crowds and rarely fish around other boats. We catch good numbers of fish and have some very exceptional days on the river and yes, some days are in triple digits. You do not need to use bait to have a great day on the river.

The Roanoke River is an amazing fishery and we are doing what we can to keep it that way. We believe that the use of bait in a catch and release fishery is not necessary and isn't conducive to the longevity of the fishery. Deep hooking mortality is the greatest threat to stripers while in the freshwaters of the Roanoke and we know the odds for deep hooking is significantly reduced with artificial lures. We are in no way trying to knock anyone that chooses to fish that way. We just prefer not to.

We offer both full and half day fishing trips. Half day trips are available with both AM and PM start times. AM trips will meet at 6AM and all PM will meet at 2PM. Half day trips are approximately 5hr and Full day trips are 8hr. With Full days you are able to split the day to fish early in the morning 4hrs and late in the evening 4hrs to fish entirely during the peak bite.
